IXC Update: First Few Weeks of the School Year

Hi everyone,

I would first like to congratulate the students who have been training tirelessly over the past few months. We were able to gauge our fitness at the Hanalani Preseason Meet this Saturday. Our boys did really well & it was great to see familiar faces!

Here are some reminders and clarifications as we start the school year:

PRACTICES & ATTENDANCE

Our attendance requirements & standard practice sessions are:

Intermediates required to attend practice 3x a week min., MWF, 4 pm - 6 pm.

JV/V required to attend 5x a week min., Monday through Friday, 4 pm - 6 pm.

If you cannot make it to one of the standard practice sessions, we have the following optional sessions for you to meet the weekly attendance minimum:

Tuesday & Thursday 6:15 am - 7:15 am morning swim in the pool starting Thursday 8/26 (All levels)

Tuesday & Thursday 3:30 am - 5 pm afternoons makeup running sessions (Intermediates)

We offer the optional sessions for students who wish to get in additional work as well as to allow students opportunities to meet their respective weekly practice minimum in the case of absolute scheduling conflicts, emergencies, Dr. appointments, sickness, etc. With all the additional sessions, we fully expect everyone to fulfill the attendance requirement.

"Group 1" who have been weigh training through the summer will continue to lift Wed & Sat. When the season starts, we will selectively take off Saturday weightroom should there be an important meet on the same day.

MEETS

As of right now, we have the two meets below on the calendar. Please save the date and volunteer your time to help us run the meets if you're available.

First Full Meet, Saturday, 9/4, 8 am - 12 noon

`Iolani Cross Country Invitational at Kaaawa Valley, Saturday, 9/18, 8 am - 12 noon

This is our big invitational (and also fundraising opportunity) and we will need a lot of parent volunteers.

We're expecting the ILH season to pick up two weeks after our invitational (late Sept / early Oct, aligning with the DOE timeline), but nothing finalized at the moment. All the meets are expected to have limited entries per team.

COVID PROTOCOL

Currently it looks like spectators are not allowed at meets. Even more reason to volunteer to help at our meets (course marshal, scoring, safety monitor, etc.) because approved volunteers will be able to come on campus. We will go over the process at the parents meeting.

It is school policy to test all students within 24hr of competition, regardless of vaccination status. The school provides the rapid testing & we will coordinate the exact times with out athletic trainers. Our school is a licensed COVID testing site, and our nurses and athletic trainers are trained and certified to conduct testing. Our school has committed in being proactive with the health & safety of the entire school experience, and this pre-competition testing protocol is part of the larger plan to promote safe return to normalcy. This testing protocol will remain in effect throughout the ILH season as well.

PARENTS MEETING (UPDATED)

We will have a parents meeting via Zoom this Thursday, 8/26, at 8 pm to go over everything and answer any questions. Plan for an hour max, most likely closer to 30 minutes.

Time: Aug 26, 2021 08:00 PM Hawaii
